Over the years, our books have endeavoured to capture a slice of the times we live in. As our world changes, so too do our books. And this season is no exception.

Emer O’Neill’s debut children’s book The Same But Different will touch families everywhere with a simple message of kindness and acceptance in a changing society. Luke O’Neill reflects on one of Ireland’s most turbulent years at the forefront of the pandemic. And in this year’s big book for kids, David McCullagh explains how change comes about at a political level.

Reflecting on 100 years of the Irish State, In Fact provides a fascinating account in facts and stats, while Gary Murphy’s superb Haughey provides a timely reassessment of Ireland’s most enigmatic leader.

Robert Sheehan’s dark literary debut, Disappearing Act, observes life, but through a somewhat distorted lens. And in the magnificent Tree Dogs, Banshee Fingers and Other Irish Words for Nature, Manchán Magan shows us how, when we look at the world through the Irish language, it becomes magical.

Life stories include Rosanna Davison on motherhood, Chris Luke on healthcare and John Brennan on finding your own way. And finally, there is the remarkable retrospective of a life cut too short in Pat Smullen’s memoir, Champion.
