Who Is Aisling? And How Much Of An Aisling Am I?

At this stage, many people are probably wondering who is Aisling? Or am I an Aisling? And if I am, how much of an Aisling am I? Don’t fret we have all the answers to your burning questions below. #OMGWACA

Who is Aisling?

SHE’S LIVING AT HOME in Ballygobbard, somewhere in the country, with her parents and commuting to her mid-level administrative job at PensionsPlus in Dublin. She’s the only one who knows how to work the fax machine, always has paracetamol for her co-workers (but nothing stronger, they’re fierce addictive) and is the queen of passive-aggressive notes about the state of the dishes in the kitchen.

Aisling goes out every Saturday night with Majella, who’s a bit of a hames (she’s lost two phones already this year – Aisling has never lost a phone), but she’s her very best friend and loyal confidante. They usually go to Flannery’s or Coppers, hoofing into the Coors Lights, the West Coast Coolers or the vodkas and Cokes (if she’s Out Out).

Twice a week, Ais spends the night at her boyfriend’s, Generic John (GJ) – an engineer and recipient of a rumoured 490 points in the Leaving, a confirmed ‘fine thing’ and centre forward for Ballygobbard’s arch rivals, Knocknamanna – always doubling up on contraception, because God forbid she might get caught out. But Aisling wants more. She wants the ring on her finger. She wants the hen with the willy straws. She wants to live with GJ. She wants that road frontage. She wants out of her parents’ house, although she’d miss Mammy turning on the electric blanket like clockwork and Daddy taking her car ‘out for a spin’ and bringing it back full of petrol.

When a week in Tenerife with GJ doesn’t end with the expected engagement, Aisling calls time on their relationship, and soon she’s surprised herself and everyone else by agreeing to move into a three-bed in Portobello with stylish Sadhbh from HR and her friend, the mysterious Elaine. Newly single and relocated to the big city, life is about to change utterly for this wonderful, strong, surprising and funny girl, who just happens to be a complete Aisling.

About the Authors

Like Aisling, Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen are ‘from down the country’, Emer from Kildare and Sarah from Carlow. They met in 2003 while studying journalism at Ballyfermot College of Further Education and formed a firm friendship, which led to that day Aisling came to be in their shared Dublin 7 flat five years later. Both have gone on to work extensively in journalism and media. Not good pensionable jobs like Aisling’s, but creative enough to find themselves in 2017 writing a book about their beloved heroine.
