Following the enormous success of her debut cookbook, The Extra Virgin Kitchen, Susan Jane White launched her brand new collection of recipes, all free from wheat, dairy and cane sugar. Her second cookbook, The Virtuous Tart: Sinful but saintly recipes for sweets, treats and snacks was launched at Ronan Ryan and Pamela Flood’s Counter Culture, in Powerscourt Townhouse Centre on Wednesday, 16 September.
But just like the super-foods and super-flours that appear in her book, Susan Jane has some super-fans too! Here’s the letter that Gill Books’ Publishing Director, Nicki Howard, read out to guests at the launch:
I am a 23 year old retired (out of work) actress who has decided to leave the lights behind for my Aga. I’m about to enroll onto a diploma in Nutritional Therapy & I cook every damn second of the damn day.
(I’ve also bought a 1973 camper that I’m planning to feed the world with, or at least some of Glastonbury.) ENOUGH ABOUT ME. That’s boring. Your cookbook is literally, my bible. After stumbling across it whilst taking pictures on my phone of pages of recipe books i couldn’t afford (naughty), I opened yours & knew I could not just capture the essence of your recipes with my iphone. I purchased your beautiful book within minutes & have not looked back.
It is so refreshing to find a cookbook with knowledge, great writing & wit. When describing you to strangers on the street (I literally insist every person that walks past me buys it) I say you’re Caitlin Moran, Nigella & Jesus, put through a vitamix & left to rest until chilled.
I don’t mean to sound like a weirdo. I have never written fan mail in my life, I just think you’re brilliant & I hope one day I can follow similar foot steps. I hope the book is successful & continues to be. (I promise I won’t claim a percentage on the rise in sales.)
A love letter, high on Bad ass Breakfast bars. Daisy x
