Strumpet City is Dublin City Libraries’ One City, One Book Choice for 2013

James Plunkett’s Strumpet City has been selected as Dublin City Libraries’ ‘One City, One Book’ choice for April 2013. Gill & Macmillan has issued a new edition of the book to coincide with events in April and to mark the centenary of the 1913 Lockout, on which the story centres. An introduction by Fintan O’Toole reminds us why this book is still relevant today.

‘One City, One Book’ is an award-winning Dublin City Council initiative, led by Dublin City Public Libraries. It encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year. This year, events ranging from photographic exhibitions and street rhymes for children, to talks and music from the period will encourage everyone to engage with Strumpet City.

Many will have fond memories of the ‘Strumpet City’ RTÉ TV series, first screened in the eighties and starring David Kelly as Rashers Tierney in one of his most memorable roles. The book was first published in 1969. Set in Dublin during the Lockout of 1913, it is a panoramic novel of city life, embracing a wide range of social milieu, from the miseries of the tenements to the cultivated, bourgeois Bradshaws.

Strumpet City is the great, sweeping Irish historical novel of the 20th century. Enjoy reading it this year and experience some of the wide variety of events taking place.

Stumpet City: One City, One Book will be published by Gill Books on Friday, 22 February 2013 priced at €10.99.
