This week RTÉ Morning Edition interviewed Kevin Kearns, author of a new book about ’Lugs’ Branigan. He had a reputation as a tough, fearless Garda, but was equally loved for his humanity and compassion. Known to intervene to protect the battered women of Dublin’s tenements, he was also a protector of and father figure to the city’s prostitutes—or “pavement hostesses,” as he called them— something unheard of in the 1950s and 1960s Ireland.
