Gill Books and Le Cool announce new spring events in The Finishing School series

Last autumn Gill Books, in association with Le Cool, launched The Finishing School - a series of events pairing their food writers and other non-fiction authors. Aimed at people who are hungry to learn, the events proved a popular new addition to Dublin’s cultural scene and they have just announced two new events for spring 2014.

On Tuesday 22 April at the Royal Society of Antiquaries on Merrion Square, Donal Skehan will introduce the legendary food writer Theodora Fitzgibbon to a new generation of foodies. Donal recently selected and photographed Theodora’s best recipes for a new book, The Pleasures of the Table: Rediscovering Theodora Fitzgibbon, published by Gill Books on 18 April.

Guests will be invited to sample some of Theodora’s recipes, followed by an interview between Nicki Howard, Publisher at Gill Books, and Donal. They will be looking back over Theodora’s exciting, bohemian life and at the changing cookbook and photography styles since Theodora first published cookbooks in the 1970s.

Then, on Wednesday 21 May at Urbun Café in Cabinteely, Susan Jane White, author of the No. 1 bestselling Extra Virgin Kitchen and Professor Jim Lucey, author of In My Room: The Human Journey as Encountered by a Psychiatrist, will discuss ‘How to be Well’. They will offer nutritional and mental health advice that will have you performing at your optimum for our increasingly fast-paced lives. Urbun café will be interpreting Susan Jane’s wheat-free, dairy-free and sugar-free recipes, proving that virtuous food need not feel like punishment for those of us who love our grub.

Tickets for the events are €10 and you can find more information and booking details at dublin.lecool.com or www.gillmacmillanbooks.ie/thefinishingschool.

About The Finishing School:

The Finishing School events draw from Gill Books’ eclectic group of authors who are ready to share their knowledge, life lessons, passion and ideas on a wide range of subjects from history to psychology, research to art, baking to craft. They are for people looking to broaden their mind and learn new things.

People associate Gill Books with their schooldays but as well as educational books they publish some of the brightest, most talented Irish non-fiction authors. Gill Books believe learning doesn’t have to stop when you leave the classroom and that’s why they launched The Finishing School, although the whole experience will hopefully be a lot more fun than school itself!’

Food at each event is catered for by an Irish cookery writer who will talk through the menu as well as contribute to the evening’s discussion. Authors featured in the series in the past include Emily Hourican, Lilly Higgins, Ross Lewis and The Irish Country Women’s Association.

Le Cool is the perfect partner for the events. Always looking to offer their readers new options on Dublin’s cultural calendar, it has proved an exciting way for their fans to engage with new publications in alternative and informal settings.

Come hungry, leave enlightened. And be on your way home by 9pm (it is a school night after all)!
