As a child, Deirdre spent every spare moment with her nose stuck in a book. Now, being a commissioning editor allows her to read all day and not be told off for it. There’s nothing she loves more than discovering new and original talent, helping authors to find their voices and launch their writing careers. While at Gill Books she has published many bestselling authors including Francis Brennan, Caitriona Perry, Roz Purcell and Dermot Bannon. Working on a wonderfully varied list, she is particularly interested in great food writing, popular psychology, children’s books, memoir and narrative non-fiction of all kinds.
Deirdre began her career in publishing in 1999 while working with The Bulletin in Sydney, Australia. Since then she has worked in editorial roles with Gill & Macmillan, New Island, Whitespace and Folens, before returning to Gill Books as Commissioning Editor in 2013. She studied at the National University of Ireland, Galway, where she gained a BA in English, Sociology and Politics, and an MA in English Literature and Publishing. She is on the board of the Dublin Book Festival and is frequently asked to speak at publishing events.
