Gill Books Opportunity: Editor

Gill Books publishes an eclectic list of bestselling and award-winning books from current affairs to history, biography to lifestyle. In collaboration with some of Ireland’s best writers, brands and a network of creative talents, Gill Books builds on a 160-year heritage whilst looking excitedly to the future.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, confident and skilled Editor to work with Gill Books. Under the direction of the Managing Editor, you will bring our books from manuscript to print and help our authors deliver their stories to a diverse readership.

The Role

Responsible for the editorial development of a number of manuscripts, you will craft and shape each title as part of the small team that produces our books. Your success will be in how well you match each author’s expertise with the commissioning editor’s vision and our readers’ expectations. Central to this will be your close collaboration with all departments and your excellent communication with the freelance creatives you commission.

Your proven track record in developing smooth relationships will enable you to manage a number of freelance editors, indexers and designers, and handle our authors and their work with sensitivity, care and tact at all times.

Responsible for tracking and maintaining schedules alongside the production department, you are highly organised and accountable with the ability to juggle multiple titles simultaneously. Your problem-solving and decision-making skills will enable you to keep a cool head when it comes to bumps in the road.

Requirements

You will be motivated by maintaining Gill’s high editorial standards and be meticulous when it comes to quality. Undertaking in-house editing as required, you will be a source of editorial expertise, a big fan of Hart’s Rules and fearless in the face of a semicolon.

If you have a third-level qualification, two years’ editorial experience and are proficient in MS Word, we want to hear from you.

Closing date

Friday 5 August 2016

To make an application, please email cgough@gill.ie. In addition to a CV, applicants should include a cover letter explaining the opportunities they believe this position will hold, together with examples of relevant experience in the skills outlined above.
