The Irish Countrywomen’s Association Cookbook members share favourite recipes used in their homes every day, many of which have nourished generations

13-10-2012 10:30

The Irish Countrywomen’s Association have been at the forefront of developments in Irish food for over one hundred years, setting up a nationwide network of country markets in 1947. In the twenty-first century, food and the joys of cooking continue to be an integral part of ICA life.

In today’s busy modern lives, the importance of a family meal cannot be overstated. It is around the family table that we learn so much about our values, where we right the wrongs of the day and discuss our problems and hopes for the future. The ICA Cookbook will help you make this experience the best it can be, and help us all to rediscover the simple pleasures of a home-cooked meal made with local produce that is in season and good for our health.

These are real recipes from real women, some of whom may have trained in home economics, some of whom were trained by their grannies (many of them ICA members too), many of whom learnt from experience by cooking for their younger siblings or their growing families.

The ICA Cookbook is an invaluable resource for the next generation of home-makers: those novice cooks who might call home for that foolproof recipe might now reach for this book instead. Think of it as akin to having not just your own mammy on speed dial, but rather a whole host of mammies and grannies from all over the country, each sharing their own words of wisdom and precious firsthand experiences.

About the ICA
The ICA was founded in May 1910 with the aim ‘to improve the standard of life in rural Ireland through education and co-operative effort’. Today the ICA has 700 local Guilds throughout Ireland in cities, towns and rural areas. They continue to offer support and fun as well as opportunities to make friends, learn new skills and contribute to the wider community.

The ICA Cookbook is published on 19 October 2012, priced at €22.99.
