Sophie White launched her debut cookbook, Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown and how to cook yourself sane(ish), at Hatch and Sons Irish Kitchen at The Little Museum of Dublin on Tuesday, 20 September. The book was officially launched by Brendan O’Connor, with guests including Sophie’s friends, family, colleagues and fellow foodies. Check out the Facebook Live video taken on the night.

Recipes from the book were served on the night with White Chocolate and Peanut Butter Fudge, Bacon and Brie Sandwiches and Coconut Truffles on the menu.

About the Book

A food philosophy for the real world - where hearts get broken, cake gets eaten and food has a role to play in almost every occasion.

Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown is Sophie White’s life on a plate: from a nervous breakdown as a result of dabbling in recreational drugs and picking up the pieces (with the help of some prescription drugs); from surviving her mother and her son – her arch nemeses and her two favourite people in the whole wide world – to meeting and falling in love with Himself; from contemplating running away from it all to losing her father in his fifties to early onset Alzheimer’s disease. And eating. Always eating.

Part cookbook, part memoir, part self-help manual, Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown marks a refreshing departure from the hordes of healthy cookbooks that have hit shelves in recent years. Of it Sophie says,

‘I would like people to feel better about their lives after reading about mine. And I want people to be amused and I want people to be nourished. It’s not written from a place of any kind of enlightenment. It’s not a promise of being fixed. When I had my breakdown I fully and utterly believed that I was broken for good and maybe I am. But so are we all. Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown is for laughing at the silly stuff, crying about some sad shit, staring, nay glaring, madness in the eye and eating, always eating.

Refreshingly honest and hilariously observed, it is also packed with recipes to suit your mood – among them Peanut Butter Cups for when you feel like you’re going nuts, handy suppers that can be put together with a few store cupboard essentials for busy working days, and wickedly indulgent Deep-Fried Mars Bars and Fried Cheese Sandwiches for hungover days or just because ….

Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown is available on our website, Eason, Amazon and in all good bookstores.
