Ground breaking new book encapsulates Dublin in all its aspects as never before

02-10-2013 15:15

Muiris de Buitléir recalls drawing a map of St. Stephen’s Green using a pocket compass and the length of his pace, aged just eight years. He also recalls, at around the same age, attempting to create a relief map of the Wicklow Mountains from putty and paint! It is apt, therefore, that the surveyor and cartographer, who has had a life-long fascination with maps, is the author of the ground breaking new book, A Portrait of Dublin in Maps.

It provides a unique picture encompassing all aspects of the city – its geology, its landscape, its urban development, its history, its architecture, its planning, its services and utilities, its administration, its politics and its people in all their variety. No other medium provides such a wealth of information about the city in such an accessible way. It is an indispensable guide to Dublin and an authoritative record of the city.

The inspiration for the book stemmed from de Buitléir’s passion for travelling to European cities and a love of their architecture, planning and culture. Every time he travelled to a new city he longed for a book such as this atlas, one that at a glance would reveal the layout, history, demographics and social background, and not just the touristy information about sightseeing and hotels. And so he set about creating one for his native city.

While the internet provides access to a massive array of information about Dublin, most of this information is difficult to locate, handle and compare. By comparison this atlas brings together a vast amount of information in a coherent and unified manner, all clearly and directly comparable because of the standard form of each map and the comprehensive range of themes covered.

Maps are artistic artefacts of a high order, both beautiful in their own right and superb communicators of landscape, architecture, society and history. A Portrait of Dublin in Maps should be a joy to own and treasure.

A Portrait of Dublin in Maps will be published by Gill & Macmillan on Friday 4, October, priced at €29.99.
