A new collection of the much loved and missed Irish Times ‘Weather Eye’ columns by Brendan McWilliams is accompanied by paintings, drawings and photographs

21-09-2012 09:15

We are a nation obsessed with the weather and never more so than during the rain-sodden summer just passed. Perhaps this explains the popularity of Brendan McWilliams’ daily ‘Weather Eye’ column, which ran in The Irish Times from 1988 until his death in 2007, or perhaps it was his ability to articulate scientific information in a way that was accessible to his readers.

Although the column was outwardly about the weather, Brendan frequently strayed from the subject, exploring other topics associated with meteorology and weaving in his love of history, literature, art, travel, music and more.

Eighty columns are included here, among them ‘The Painful Face of the Weather’ and ‘The Cleverness of Tig A’ Doicheall’, where Brendan draws nostalgically on recollections from his childhood in Waterville, County Kerry; ‘Making the Best of April Showers’ and ‘Midsummer Measures’ exhibit Brendan’s dry tongue-in-cheek humour; and ‘The Hues and Whys of Seas and Lakes’, displays his brilliant ability to inform.

Illustrated Weather Eye is the third collection of Brendan’s columns published since his death. The paintings, drawings and photographs that complement them, and arranged month by month, create a beautiful gift package.

Brendan McWilliams, BSc, MBA, CMet, FRMetS, was born in Dublin in 1944 and grew up in Waterville, Co. Kerry, where his father was, for many years, in charge of the nearby Valentia Observatory in Cahirciveen. He graduated in science from University College Cork in 1964 and later in Business Administration from University College Dublin.

He worked as a meteorologist throughout his adult life and presented the RTÉ radio and television weather forecasts during the 1970s. He is best known in Ireland for his weekly contributions to Today with Pat Kenny on RTÉ Radio One and for his daily ‘Weather Eye’ column which ran in The Irish Times for almost two decades.

Illustrated Weather Eye is published on 28 September, priced at €19.99.
